VTLS to host workshop on VITAL at Open Repositories Conference

VTLS will host a workshop featuring its VITAL repository software on May 21, 2009, at the 4th Annual Open Repositories Conference in Atlanta, GA. The conference, which will be hosted by the Georgia Tech Library and Information Center, will be held May 18 – 21 at the Georgia Institute of Technology Hotel and Conference Center and Global Learning Conference Center.

The VTLS workshop will be open to all researchers, repository managers and anyone interested in discussing the challenges facing modern repositories for discovery, access, preservation and presentation.

VITAL is an institutional repository solution designed for universities, libraries, museums, archives and information centers. Built on Fedora™, VITAL is designed to simplify the development of digital object repositories and to provide seamless online search and retrieval of information. VITAL provides extensive workflow extensions, detailed management utilities, enhanced indexing, advanced searching and specialized content displays.

The workshop will cover the following areas of interest:

A general overview of VITAL 4.0 features

· The VITAL access portal, which provides a simple, public web interface to the repository content

· A web-based administrative module that provides system administrators robust functionality for managing objects within the VITAL repository

· Ingestion into the VITAL repository, which can be achieved in several ways, including VALET, the administrative module and the batch tool

Discussion of the future of VITAL

· VTLS will discuss VITAL’s upcoming releases. Attendees are invited to review designs for upcoming features and make suggestions for new features.

Questions and Answers

· Heather Myers, VITAL Product Manager, and Joe Liversedge, VITAL Development Manager will be on hand to answer questions and discuss VITAL workflows.

“There have been substantial developments in the VITAL software since the last Open Repositories Conference. Release 3.4 and Release 4.0 of VITAL are now available for immediate installation. In this workshop, VTLS plans to share the new developments and seek input on future enhancements”, said Heather Myers, VITAL Product Manager.
